A wise man once said that "all things in the North are devilish". And by all accounts, we agree. The North of England is legendary for its motorcycling routes and offers a bit of everything.

It's biking nirvana.

You're riding the sweeping curves of a dramatic countryside landscape, vast swathes of greenery to boot. Life is good.

So top up your tank. Here are the top 5 places to ride in the North of England.

Pickering to Whitby

Pickering to Whitby

The A169 route to Whitby is iconic and gives you a glorious run across the North Yorkshire Moors. You'll be treated to some spectacular colour changes throughout the year as the seasons change. Think steady climbs and a tight hairpin turn as you make your way towards the A171, where you'll turn right.

Once you've hit your destination, be sure to mark the occasion with fish and chips in view of Whitby's commanding abbey. Maybe you'll even see Dracula..

Haydon Bridge to Penrith

This ride has been titled "Britain's greatest road" by MCN. The cornering is impossible to beat - hairpin after hairpin promises a buzz that you need to experience for yourself.

You'll be navigating these switchbacks to Cupola Bridge before ascending to the top of the moor. The road surface here is decent and makes for a pleasurable journey to Alston, where you can make a stop for a bite to eat (and fuel). There's top-notch scenery before you begin the descent to Penrith. Perhaps your new favourite road?

Skelwith Bridge to Gosforth

Skelwith Bridge to Gosforth

Drink in some of the finest scenery in the Lake District on this wild ride. Following the A593 towards Coniston, you'll come across a right turn for the famous Wrynose Pass. Rugged crags and rocky contours devour the track as you conquer the first summit. Making your way down to Cockley Beck, you'll then have a steep climb to the top of Hardknott Pass. The views here are almost heroic.

The rear of the way over to Eskdale is equally demanding, so ride safe and enjoy.

Northumberland Castle Loop

This ride takes you past the most breathtaking castles in Northumberland. Starting in Alnwick, you'll head to the coast with the North Sea over your right shoulder. As you pass through Shoreston Hall, the Bamburgh Castle will appear against the skyline, towering over the water.

On this loop you'll also see Warkworth Castle as well as the magical (and wizard-famous) Alwnick Castle. It's an impressive route that encompasses the "Northumberland Coast Area of Natural Beauty".

Middleton-in-Teesdale to Brough

Middleton-in-Teesdale to Brough

A good alternative to the Dales. Expect some great corners and stretches of straight road, but be prepared for bumpy terrain in some places which makes it a little tricky. Fantastic views along the way and generally a quiet area.

Watch out for the sheep near Brough!
